Ghost Block Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 Yountville - Stringer Cellars

Reviews

95 points - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, MW
The single-varietal 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Ghost Block, tasted as a barrel sample, is deep garnet-purple in color. Slightly subdued to begin, it needs a little swirling to bring out wonderfully pure notes of crushed blueberries, fresh blackberries, and black cherries, followed by hints of chocolate mint and violets. The medium-bodied palate is elegantly styled and refreshing, featuring plush tannins and a fragrant finish.

95 points - International Wine Report

This Cabernet Sauvignon from Ghost Block in Yountville, the heart of Napa Valley, showcases a stunning dark purple color and delightful aromas of wild berries, spice, and cocoa. On the palate, it presents ripe black fruits, subtle notes of resinous herbs, and a finishing touch of black pepper. With excellent acidity and a smooth tannic structure, this wine leads you through a truly beautiful experience.

94 points - James Suckling
A compelling nose of currants, mulberries, dark plums, bay leaves, stones and cloves. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins. Textural with a rich and velvety core of berries and chocolate. Poised with a controlled power and polished character throughout. Focused and lively finish with excellent length.

93 points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Stringer's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Ghost Block adds hints of mint and cedar to its cassis-scented fruit. It's a streamlined, structured example of Yountville Cabernet Sauvignon, its medium to full-bodied palate framed by silky tannins that linger in swirls of soft, dusty texture on the finish.

Tasting Notes

The 2021 Ghost Block is modern Napa Valley Cabernet at its best. It pours a nearly opaque deep red. Its nose bursting with wild blackberries, fresh thyme, menthol, baking spice, and coco nib. The palate is dominated by perfectly ripe black fruit and herbal cassis flavors all framed by mouthwatering acidity and its youthful tannic structure. Very good now with a decant, but patience will be rewarded. This wine will make a statement with any meal.

Vineyard & Region

Ghost Block is a legendary vineyard right in the heart of Napa Valley. According to local lore, the ghost of George C. Yount, (the first person to plant grapes in Napa), can be seen wandering the hillside vineyard. Ghost Block sits on a gently sloping knoll at the base of Yountville Hill on the north end of the town of Yountville. It is organically farmed and planted to old Mondavi Clone Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard is very unique in that it is a hillside vineyard located on the valley floor.

Varietal Composition & Elevage

100% Cabernet Sauvignon
in 75% new French oak for 19 months

This wine is made from Old Mondavi Clone 7 grapes, hand-picked, destemmed, and fermented in a stainless steel open-top tank. It undergoes a 4-day cold soak, with fermentation reaching 95 degrees early on. The tank is pumped over and punched down three times a day initially, later reduced to two times. After 21 days on the skins, the wine is pressed when fully dry, and the free-run juice is kept separate, yielding a wine of unique character and depth.
